The next two photos are from my trip to Chontala in Fall 2010. The school had very few supplies and only served elementary children (older students have to find a way to attend school in a larger town), but the teacher we met was incredibly warm and excited for his students, who were nearly all native Mayan children. The next picture is from the inside of a church, where many people in the community turned out to celebrate one young man’s graduation from high school – a very rare event in a place where most people drop out after 5th grade.
